Master of Science in Policing

Algemeen

The Master of Science in Policing is a joint program of the Canterbury Christchurch University and the Police academy. This program provides you with a deep academic understanding of issues related to strategic policing jobs in a network-driven context, nationally and internationally. As an MSc in Policing graduate you are a reflective practitioner and eminently suitable for the coordination of operational tactics or strategies, or for supportive tasks at a strategic level of policing or law enforcement. You can play a role in (inter) national police cooperation or act as an advisor or discussant for decision-makers within the police and other law enforcement agencies. You have the ability to transform academic findings into operational recommendations and tactical scenarios. You can convert practical policing outcomes or investigative activities into managerial reports for police forces, justice authorities and public administration bodies. You can explore and develop policing strategies from a multidisciplinary perspective, strategies that are also beneficial for police partners. You can carry-out evaluations or case-studies as a basis for new policing concepts or organisational improvements.

Voor wie

This unique academic master's program is aimed at police colleagues and employees of partners in the security domain who hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent.

For colleagues such as team chiefs or Operations Specialists who want to move more to the strategic level, this course is a very good opportunity.

Opbouw

The curriculum consists of four modules, i.e. Policing Models, Policing & Society (part 1 & part 2), Police Legitimacy and International Policing, that are being assessed by a literature exam, a literature review, a case study, an essay and a research report (including a presentation). The generic module titles allow for addressing both recurrent and topical policing issues. You can explore a variety of self-chosen topics through the different assignments. In addition to the abovementioned course work, you have to write and defend a master thesis (called a dissertation in the UK).

The program starts with an introduction week, which takes place in Canterbury. Over the course of a year and a half, each of the modules consists of a number of 'weeks' for classes (from 09.00 am till 04.00 pm), followed by single-day tutoring sessions (on average every 3-4 weeks). In between, you are expected to keep up with readings and assignments independently. The final year and a half is spent working on the final research assignments under supervision of a tutor.

Resultaat

After completing the course you can work within national and international police cooperation at a strategic level. As a graduate you are a 'reflective practitioner': you don't just take scientific findings and articles at face value, but can reflect on them with a critical eye and knowledge. You can nuance research findings, translate the information into practice and provide strategic advice on it. During the course there are interactive discussions and you will hear all kinds of different perspectives on policing. Someone who looks at a problem from the perspective of operations thinks very differently than someone who works in operations.

The course is in English and you will eventually receive an MScdiploma from Canterbury Christ Church University.
